Does obstructive sleep apnoea cause daytime sleepiness?

Short answer
Daytime Sleepiness is a very common presentation of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea because repeated arousals reduce restorative sleep.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical mechanism
- Brief arousals can fragment sleep without full awareness.
- Safety point
- Avoid driving or machinery when you may nod off.
Why sleepiness can persist
In obstructive sleep apnoea, the airway narrows repeatedly during sleep. The brain briefly shifts toward wakefulness to reopen it, often without the person remembering. This interrupts normal sleep stages and can leave someone unrefreshed despite spending enough time in bed. Sleepiness may show as dozing while reading, reduced alertness, irritability or difficulty staying awake in quiet settings.
Short sleep, shift work, sedating medicines, alcohol, depression, anaemia and thyroid problems can also cause tiredness. A clinician will consider the whole pattern rather than relying on sleepiness alone.
What you can do
Arrange medical review if sleepiness is frequent, affects work or study, or comes with loud snoring, gasping or witnessed pauses. Keep regular sleep times, review sedating medicines with a clinician and avoid alcohol near bedtime. Do not drive, cycle in traffic or operate machinery when you feel likely to nod off. A clinician may suggest a sleep assessment and can discuss treatment if apnoea is confirmed.
When to seek care promptly
Seek urgent help if sleepiness comes with sudden confusion, fainting, severe breathing trouble or new neurological symptoms. Contact a clinician promptly if you have fallen asleep while driving or had near-misses, or if another person observes repeated pauses in breathing during sleep.
Questions for your doctor
Could my sleepiness be caused by disrupted breathing, medication or another health issue? Should I have a sleep study? What safety steps should I follow until the cause is clearer?

Questions people ask
Can you have sleep apnoea without feeling sleepy?
Yes. Symptoms vary, and some people mainly notice snoring, morning headaches or poor-quality sleep.
Will more time in bed fix the sleepiness?
Extra time may not help if breathing interruptions keep fragmenting sleep; persistent sleepiness deserves an assessment.
