Does non-small cell lung cancer cause persistent cough?

The cough may be dry or produce mucus, and it can sound different from a person’s usual cough. Other changes can include breathlessness, chest discomfort, hoarseness, repeated chest infections, or blood-streaked phlegm. Cough is common with infections, asthma, reflux, smoking, and other conditions too, so it cannot identify lung cancer by itself.

Arrange a clinical review if a cough persists, worsens, changes character, or returns after treatment for an infection. Share how long it has lasted, whether you smoke or vape, what medicines you take, and any breathlessness, pain, fever, weight change, or blood in mucus. The clinician can decide whether examination, chest imaging, or other tests are appropriate.

Seek emergency help for severe difficulty breathing, coughing up more than a small amount of blood, blue lips, new confusion, fainting, or sudden severe chest pain. Sit upright and avoid driving yourself if breathing is seriously affected.

Ask what might be sustaining the cough, whether your medicines or another lung condition could contribute, and which tests would clarify the cause. Ask how to ease irritation safely and which changes require urgent help.
