Does nerve root block treat sciatica?

A clinician places medication near a selected spinal nerve root, usually using imaging guidance. The purpose may be to calm inflammation around the nerve and make rehabilitation more manageable. Improvement can support the clinical picture, but no response does not rule out sciatica. Relief may fade, and the procedure does not remove a disc problem, narrowing, or another structural source.

Discuss your symptoms, medicines, allergies, diabetes, bleeding problems, and previous injections with the treating specialist. Ask what activity is suitable afterward and which exercises should continue. A plan may include movement, physiotherapy, and other pain treatments. Report increasing weakness, new numbness, severe headache, fever, or worsening pain after the injection. Follow the clinic's specific preparation and recovery instructions.

Seek emergency help for new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the saddle area, or rapidly worsening weakness in a leg. Urgent review is also needed for fever with severe back pain or possible infection after an injection. Do not wait for a planned follow-up when neurological function is changing.

Which nerve is suspected, and what evidence supports the injection? Is the goal pain relief, diagnosis, or both? What alternatives are available? How will we decide whether another treatment is needed if relief is limited?
