Does mumps cause swollen glands?

Mumps commonly affects the salivary glands in front of and below the ears, sometimes on one side and sometimes on both. The area may feel firm, sore, or tight, and chewing, swallowing, or opening the mouth can be uncomfortable. Fever, headache, tiredness, and muscle aches may occur alongside the swelling. Swollen glands also occur with many other infections and conditions, so the symptom alone does not establish mumps. A clinician will consider the full pattern and any contact with a person who has the infection.

Rest and drink enough fluid to keep your urine pale. Soft foods and cool drinks may be easier if the jaw is tender; avoid acidic foods if they increase salivary pain. Do not share utensils, drinks, towels, or toothbrushes. If mumps is possible, phone a healthcare service before attending in person and follow advice about limiting close contact. Ask a pharmacist which pain or fever medicine fits your age, health conditions, and current medicines.

Get medical advice for new gland swelling with fever, worsening pain, difficulty eating or drinking, or suspected exposure to mumps. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing or swallowing, severe headache, a stiff neck, confusion, repeated vomiting, dehydration, or unusual drowsiness. Sudden testicular pain or abdominal pain also needs prompt assessment.

Ask which glands appear enlarged, whether testing is needed, how long you should avoid close contact, and when normal activities can resume. Tell the clinician when swelling began, whether it is changing, your vaccination history, and any fever or pain.
