Does motion sickness cause vomiting?

Motion sickness occurs when visual information, inner-ear balance signals and body movement do not match. The mismatch may begin with uneasiness, cold sweating, dizziness, extra saliva or nausea, then progress to vomiting. It can occur during road, sea or air travel and on rides with repeated motion. Vomiting has many causes, so vomiting outside a movement trigger should not be labelled motion sickness without considering other explanations.

Choose a stable position, face the direction of travel, look at the horizon and keep your head supported. Stop reading or using a screen, seek cool fresh air and take frequent small sips of water. Light food may be easier than a large or greasy meal. A pharmacist or clinician can discuss preventive travel medicines before a journey; check suitability carefully because some cause sleepiness or interact with other medicines.

Get urgent medical help for blood or green fluid in vomit, severe dehydration, fainting, confusion, a severe headache, chest pain or severe abdominal pain. Arrange review if vomiting continues after travel, prevents you keeping fluids down, follows an injury or comes with fever or unusual neurological symptoms. Oral rehydration advice may be needed if fluid losses continue.
