Does methotrexate treatment treat psoriasis?

Methotrexate is a systemic medicine, meaning it works throughout the body rather than only on one plaque. It may soften raised, scaly patches and reduce redness, itching, and new lesions. Improvement is assessed over time, and the response can differ between people. The medicine is usually taken on a planned schedule, not as an extra dose when a flare appears.

Because methotrexate can affect the liver, blood cells, and other organs, treatment needs clinical supervision. Pregnancy, liver disease, heavy alcohol use, kidney problems, infection, and some medicines may change whether it is appropriate. Do not start, stop, or change the dose without the prescriber.

Arrange a dermatology review to confirm the psoriasis diagnosis and discuss the extent of disease, previous treatments, medical history, and current medicines. If methotrexate is chosen, follow the exact weekly or otherwise prescribed schedule, attend requested blood tests, and tell the clinic about new medicines or supplements. Use the prescribed skin care routine alongside treatment, including gentle cleansing and regular moisturising.

Contact your treatment team promptly for fever, a persistent sore throat, unusual bruising, marked weakness, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe nausea, or a new widespread rash. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, facial swelling, or signs of a serious infection. A sudden severe psoriasis flare with fever or feeling very unwell also needs urgent assessment.
