Does menopause cause periods to stop?

Menopause is reached after the menstrual cycle has stopped for twelve months because the ovaries are producing much less reproductive hormone. The transition beforehand can bring cycles that become farther apart, lighter, heavier, or unpredictable. Hot flushes, night sweats, sleep changes, vaginal dryness, and mood changes may occur as well, although not everyone has the same pattern.

A stopped period is not enough by itself to confirm menopause. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, changes in weight, intense exercise, stress, thyroid conditions, and some medicines can also affect bleeding. Menopause before the expected age deserves a clinical review so the cause and any health needs can be considered.

Track the date and pattern of every bleed, along with symptoms and medicines. If pregnancy is possible, take a pregnancy test. Arrange an appointment if periods stop unexpectedly, if cycles change substantially, or if you are concerned about early menopause. A clinician may ask about your history and decide whether an examination or tests are useful; do not start hormone treatment without personalised advice.

Seek prompt medical advice for bleeding after menopause, bleeding that is unusually heavy, severe pelvic pain, faintness, or bleeding with a possible pregnancy. These features need assessment because they are not explained by the usual menopause transition alone.

Ask whether your bleeding pattern fits perimenopause, whether pregnancy or another condition should be ruled out, and which symptoms or changes should prompt a follow-up.
