Does Meniere's disease cause ringing in the ears?

Meniere's disease involves the inner ear. Changes in inner-ear fluid pressure can disturb hearing and balance signals, producing tinnitus, often described as ringing, buzzing, humming or roaring. The sound may be intermittent or persistent, and it can become more noticeable during an episode. Ear fullness, fluctuating hearing and vertigo may appear at the same time.

Ringing in the ears is also linked with noise exposure, earwax, infections, medicines, age-related hearing change and other conditions. The symptom alone cannot establish Meniere's disease. A clinician will ask whether it is one-sided, pulse-synchronous, sudden, or associated with hearing or balance changes.

Book an assessment if ringing persists, returns frequently, affects sleep or makes concentration difficult. Record when it starts, which ear is affected, how long it lasts, and whether hearing fullness or vertigo occurs. Reduce exposure to loud sound and use comfortable background sound at bedtime if silence makes the ringing more intrusive. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without discussing it with the prescriber.

Seek urgent review for ringing with sudden hearing loss, severe new vertigo, a head injury, facial weakness, trouble speaking or other neurological symptoms. Pulsing ringing that matches your heartbeat, especially when new or one-sided, also needs prompt assessment. Emergency symptoms such as fainting, chest pain or severe weakness require emergency help.

Ask whether your ringing pattern calls for a hearing test, ear examination or specialist referral. Discuss possible medicine or noise-related contributors, strategies for sleep and concentration, and the warning signs that should bring you back sooner.
