Does membrane sweep treat overdue pregnancy?

During an examination, a clinician gently separates the membranes around the pregnancy from the cervix. This can release local substances that may help the cervix soften and labour begin. It is offered only when the cervix can be reached and when your maternity team considers it suitable.

A sweep is an attempt to encourage spontaneous labour, not the same as a planned induction. It may cause cramping, pressure, light bleeding or irregular contractions. Some people need more than one sweep, while others may still be offered another induction method if labour does not begin or if monitoring shows that delivery should be planned.

Ask your midwife or obstetrician why a sweep is being offered, whether your cervix is ready, and what the next step will be if contractions do not establish. Follow the advised plan for fetal monitoring and attendance. After the examination, use a pad if needed so you can observe bleeding, and note any regular contractions or changes in fluid.

Contact your maternity unit promptly for heavy bleeding, a gush or ongoing leak of fluid, severe or constant abdominal pain, regular painful contractions, fever, or noticeably reduced fetal movement. Seek emergency help if you feel very unwell or have severe pain with bleeding.
