Does mastitis cause breast skin changes?

Inflammation may make part of the breast look red or darker than usual and feel warmer or tender. Swelling can make the skin look stretched. These changes may occur around a painful or firm area and can develop while breastfeeding or after milk production has begun. Breast skin changes have several possible causes, so their appearance does not by itself confirm mastitis.

Rest and drink fluids. Continue breastfeeding or expressing milk if comfortable, while avoiding forceful massage and pressure on the breast. Wear a supportive but non-tight bra. A cool cloth may soothe heat and swelling. Arrange advice from a clinician or pharmacist about pain relief and feeding positions that reduce pressure on the affected area.

Seek medical advice promptly if redness is spreading, swelling is increasing, you develop fever or feel very unwell, or the skin change does not begin to improve. Urgent care is needed for fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty or a rapidly worsening illness. A persistent dimple, inversion or skin thickening should be checked even if it is not painful.
