Does malignant ascites cause abdominal swelling?

Malignant ascites is a collection of fluid in the abdominal cavity associated with cancer. As fluid accumulates, the abdomen may feel full, tight, heavy, or visibly enlarged. Pressure can reduce appetite and cause early fullness, discomfort, breathlessness, or changes in movement. Abdominal swelling has other possible causes, so its presence does not identify malignant ascites on its own.

Tell your oncology or medical team if your abdomen is enlarging, uncomfortable, or making meals and breathing harder. The team may examine the abdomen and use imaging or a fluid sample to clarify the cause. Treatment is tailored to the underlying cancer and symptoms; measures may include medicines, nutrition support, or drainage when clinically appropriate. Do not start fluid tablets or restrictive diets without advice.

Seek urgent care for severe or rapidly increasing pain, new breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, confusion, fainting, inability to pass urine, or a tense abdomen with sudden deterioration. Contact your care team promptly if swelling is worsening, fluid seems to return, or you cannot maintain food and fluids.

Ask what may be causing the swelling, whether fluid testing or imaging is needed, which symptoms require immediate help, and how to manage appetite, breathlessness, and comfort at home. Ask what to expect if drainage is recommended.
