Does malaria cause fever?

Malaria symptoms may begin after a delay following a mosquito bite, and fever can return in episodes. The pattern differs between people and parasite types. Fever by itself does not identify malaria: viral infections, bacterial infections, heat illness, and other causes can produce it too.

A clinician will ask about travel, residence, mosquito exposure, medicines, and the timing of symptoms. Blood testing is used to look for malaria and guide treatment; prompt diagnosis matters because illness can worsen.

Contact a healthcare service promptly for fever during or after travel to a malaria area. Keep drinking fluids if able, rest, and note temperatures, travel dates, and medicines taken. Do not delay assessment because a fever temporarily improves or because you have no obvious mosquito bite.

Seek emergency help for confusion, fainting, seizures, difficulty breathing, severe weakness, persistent vomiting, or inability to keep fluids down. Pregnancy, infancy, older age, and reduced immunity lower the threshold for urgent medical advice.
