Does a liver function test treat hepatitis C?

A liver function test measures blood markers that can rise when liver cells are irritated or the liver is under strain. It does not detect every hepatitis C infection, remove the virus, or show the complete amount of scarring. A clinician uses it with an infection test and an assessment of liver health.

Hepatitis C can be present without obvious symptoms. Follow-up may include checking whether the virus is active, reviewing medicines and assessing for fibrosis or cirrhosis. Results are considered together rather than used as a stand-alone treatment decision.

If hepatitis C is suspected or confirmed, arrange specialist or primary-care follow-up to discuss antiviral treatment and liver assessment. Take medicines as prescribed, mention all supplements, and avoid sharing needles, razors or toothbrushes. Cover cuts and dispose of blood-stained materials safely.

Avoid alcohol if advised, and do not assume that feeling well means the liver is unaffected. Keep appointments for repeat testing so treatment response and liver health can be reviewed.

Get urgent medical help for confusion, vomiting blood, black stools, severe abdominal swelling, or sudden severe pain. Contact a clinician promptly for jaundice, very dark urine, persistent vomiting, or unusual bleeding or bruising.
