Does liposuction treat submental fullness?

Submental liposuction targets a local fat pocket below the chin through small access points. It may improve the transition between the jawline and neck when excess fat is a major contributor. The procedure cannot correct every cause of a double chin: loose skin, muscle laxity, bone structure and gland position may also affect the outline. Swelling, bruising, tenderness, temporary numbness and contour unevenness are possible while tissues heal. An in-person assessment helps distinguish fat-related fullness from other contributors.

Ask the surgeon to assess your skin flexibility, fat distribution, jawline and neck anatomy from more than one angle. Share your medical history, medicines, smoking status and prior procedures. Clarify the anaesthesia, access points, compression garment, sleeping position, work restrictions and follow-up plan. Photos can help with comparison, but the early postoperative appearance is affected by swelling and should not be judged too quickly.

Call the surgical team if swelling becomes rapidly worse, pain increases instead of settling, the wound drains, redness spreads or you develop a fever. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, swallowing difficulty, chest pain or fainting. Keep the neck supported as instructed and do not massage the treated area unless your clinician has advised it.
