Does lichen planus cause skin bumps?

Lichen planus can cause small, firm, raised bumps that may look violet, reddish, or brown depending on skin tone. They often have a flat top and may occur in groups on the wrists, ankles, legs, or lower back. Some people also notice intense itching or fine white lines over the surface.

Bumps can also result from follicle irritation, insect bites, eczema, infections, or other inflammatory conditions. A clinician considers colour, texture, scale, itch, timing, and distribution rather than relying on the presence of bumps alone. A biopsy may be discussed if the pattern is unclear.

Avoid picking or rubbing the bumps, use a gentle fragrance-free moisturiser, and wear soft clothing where friction is present. Photographing changes in consistent lighting can help a clinician understand how the rash is evolving. Do not share steroid creams or use potent treatments on the face, genitals, or broken skin without instructions.

Arrange an assessment if bumps persist, multiply, bleed, become painful, or leave lasting colour changes. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading lesions, pus, fever, facial swelling, eye symptoms, or painful mouth or genital sores. Early evaluation is especially useful when itching is disrupting sleep or scratching is breaking the skin.
