Does leukaemia cause unexplained fever?

Leukaemia can interfere with normal immune-cell production and leave the body less able to respond to infection. Fever may also reflect the disease's inflammatory effects. It can come and go, occur with chills or night sweating, or appear alongside fatigue, pale skin, bruising, bleeding, swollen glands, or repeated infections.

Many non-cancer causes are possible, including viral or bacterial infection, inflammatory illness, heat exposure, and medicine reactions. The pattern, duration, associated symptoms, examination, and tests help a clinician work out what is happening.

Contact a clinician about a fever without a clear explanation, especially if it returns or occurs with unusual tiredness, bruising, bleeding, or recurrent infections. Note when the fever starts, how it changes, accompanying chills or sweats, recent travel or contact with illness, and every medicine or supplement you take.

Drink fluids if you can, rest, and follow local medical advice about fever medicines. Do not delay assessment by repeatedly treating a fever without investigating its cause.

Seek urgent care for severe weakness, confusion, difficulty breathing, chest pain, a stiff neck, a seizure, dehydration, or fever in someone receiving treatment that weakens immunity. A fever with heavy bleeding or a rapidly worsening condition also warrants prompt help.

Ask which causes need checking, whether blood tests are needed, how to monitor your temperature, what symptoms should trigger urgent contact, and whether any current medicine could be contributing to the fever.
