Does laryngitis cause sore throat?

Laryngitis is inflammation of the larynx, also called the voice box. The irritated area can make swallowing uncomfortable and may feel dry, scratchy or raw. Hoarseness, a weak voice or temporary loss of voice often occurs alongside the throat discomfort. Viral infections are a frequent trigger, although voice overuse, smoke, reflux or other irritation can also contribute.

The presence of a sore throat does not identify its cause by itself. Colds, tonsil problems, allergies and other throat conditions can produce similar symptoms. The pattern, duration and accompanying signs help a clinician judge what is happening.

Rest your voice by speaking softly and taking breaks; whispering can strain the voice as well. Drink fluids regularly, use warm drinks if soothing, and avoid smoking and second-hand smoke. A humidified room may ease dryness. Do not share drinks or utensils while an infection is possible, and follow medicine-label directions if you use an over-the-counter pain reliever that is suitable for you.

Seek urgent medical help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow liquids, drooling, rapidly increasing neck swelling or a bluish colour around the lips. Arrange a medical review if the sore throat is severe, symptoms are worsening, fever persists, or your voice remains markedly hoarse after the illness should have settled. People with repeated episodes or significant reflux may need a more tailored assessment.
