Does knee bursitis cause knee swelling?

A bursa is a thin fluid-filled sac that helps tissues glide near the knee. Irritation can make the sac fill with extra fluid, creating a soft or firm-looking bulge over the affected area. Swelling in front of the kneecap may become more noticeable after kneeling, while swelling near the inner knee can have a different pattern.

Most people with knee bursitis notice knee swelling, but not every swollen knee has bursitis. Joint swelling, injury, infection and other causes can look similar, so the position of the swelling and accompanying symptoms are useful during an examination.

Pause activities that repeatedly compress the swollen spot and avoid kneeling directly on it. Elevate the leg when resting and use a cloth-wrapped cold pack for brief comfort if this suits you. Do not puncture, press hard on or attempt to drain the swelling. A clinician can decide whether you need observation, rehabilitation or further testing.

Get prompt care if swelling develops quickly, the skin is hot or red, pain is severe, you have fever, or you feel unwell. Seek urgent help after major trauma or if you cannot bear weight. These features may signal infection or a more serious injury and should not be managed by home compression alone.
