Does knee bracing treat a patellar dislocation?

A patellar-stabilising brace may help guide the kneecap and reduce apprehension during walking or exercise. It does not put a dislocated kneecap back into place, repair damaged cartilage, or correct every alignment or ligament problem. Repeated instability can have several contributors, including injury to supporting tissue, leg alignment, muscle control, and the shape of the joint.

A first-time dislocation should be assessed, even if the kneecap returns to position. Follow guidance on activity, swelling control, and movement, then complete rehabilitation focused on quadriceps strength, hip control, balance, and confidence. Use a fitted brace for the activities advised by your clinician. Recurrent episodes or persistent catching may require an orthopaedic review to discuss further options.

Get urgent care if the kneecap remains out of place, the knee looks deformed, pain is severe, or you cannot move or bear weight. Prompt assessment is also needed after a new dislocation with rapid swelling, locking, or a foot that becomes cold, pale, or numb. Do not force the kneecap back yourself.
