Do keloid scars cause skin lumps?

A keloid is an overgrown scar response. Instead of stopping when an injury has closed, scar tissue builds up into a firm, smooth, rubbery, or shiny raised area. It may extend beyond the original wound and can be darker or lighter than nearby skin. Itching, tenderness, tightness, or discomfort can occur, although some keloids cause no symptoms. A raised mark that remains within the original wound may be a different type of scar, so appearance and history both matter.

Do not cut, squeeze, or repeatedly scratch a raised scar, because additional injury can stimulate more scar tissue. Protect the area from friction and sun while it heals. A dermatologist may discuss silicone products, injections, pressure therapy, freezing, laser treatment, or carefully selected surgery. Keloids can return after treatment, so prevention and follow-up are part of the plan. Tell the clinician about previous keloids before elective piercings or procedures.

Book an assessment for a lump that is growing, painful, bleeding, ulcerated, repeatedly irritated, or appearing without a clear injury. Seek prompt care if redness, warmth, drainage, or fever suggests infection. A clinician can distinguish a keloid from an inflamed cyst, another scar pattern, or a different skin growth by examining the site and its evolution.

Ask whether the raised area is a keloid or another lesion, what treatment goal is realistic, how recurrence will be monitored, how discomfort can be managed, and which future procedures may increase your scarring risk.
