Does joint aspiration treat pseudogout?

Pseudogout, also called calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease, happens when crystals irritate a joint. A sudden painful, swollen joint can resemble infection or other forms of arthritis. Aspiration withdraws fluid with a needle, and laboratory examination can look for calcium pyrophosphate crystals. Testing is especially useful when the diagnosis is uncertain or infection must be considered.

Removing fluid may lessen pressure in a very swollen joint, but it does not remove every crystal from the body or change the condition on its own. Once the cause is clearer, a clinician can discuss anti-inflammatory treatment, protection of the joint, and ways to manage future episodes.

Arrange medical assessment for a new, hot, swollen joint rather than assuming it is pseudogout. Rest the affected area and avoid putting extra strain on it while waiting for advice. Bring a list of medicines and relevant health conditions, because these can affect which anti-inflammatory options are suitable. Follow aftercare instructions carefully if fluid is removed.

Seek urgent assessment for fever, chills, marked redness or warmth, severe pain, or inability to move or use the joint. Infection can look similar to a crystal flare and needs prompt treatment. Aspiration helps separate these possibilities, but a confirmed crystal finding does not by itself rule out infection in every situation.

Ask whether joint fluid should be tested for both crystals and infection, what treatment is suitable for this flare, how soon movement can resume, and whether another condition could be causing repeated attacks.
