Does IVF treat blocked fallopian tubes?

In natural conception, sperm and egg meet in a fallopian tube before an early embryo travels to the uterus. IVF changes that route: eggs are collected from the ovaries, fertilisation takes place in a laboratory, and an embryo is transferred into the uterus. Because the egg and sperm meet outside the tubes, tubal blockage does not necessarily prevent this treatment from being considered.

The location and cause of the blockage still matter. Fluid-filled or damaged tubes may affect treatment planning and may need separate discussion before embryo transfer. A scan or tubal test helps the clinician understand the anatomy.

A fertility team may review tubal imaging, ovarian reserve, ovulation, the uterus, and semen analysis before suggesting IVF. Ask whether the blockage affects one tube or both, whether fluid is present, and whether any procedure should be discussed before treatment. The team will explain ovarian stimulation, egg collection, fertilisation, embryo culture, and transfer, including medicines, monitoring, and possible side effects. Keep copies of prior imaging and operation reports.

Arrange a fertility consultation after a blocked tube is diagnosed, particularly if pregnancy is desired or there is a history of ectopic pregnancy, pelvic infection, or pelvic surgery. Seek urgent care for sharp one-sided pelvic pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, heavy bleeding, or fever, especially after a positive pregnancy test. These symptoms can require immediate assessment.

Ask how the blockage was diagnosed, whether either tube is affected, whether the uterus is ready for transfer, and whether fluid in a tube changes the plan. Discuss embryo options, monitoring, warning symptoms, and how the team will decide the timing of transfer.
