Does IV fluid therapy help with excessive thirst?

Thirst is a signal that your body needs fluid, yet a strong or ongoing thirst can also accompany fluid loss, high blood glucose, dry mouth, fever, or medicines. IV fluids place water and dissolved salts into a vein, so a clinician may use them when vomiting, weakness, confusion, or another problem makes drinking unsafe or ineffective. Relief should follow correction of the fluid deficit; thirst that continues deserves a review of the cause.

If you are alert and able to swallow, take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Avoid forcing large amounts quickly if you feel sick. Note how often you urinate, whether your mouth is dry, and any vomiting, diarrhoea, fever, or new medicines. Do not arrange IV fluids solely for thirst without an assessment, because the wrong fluid or amount can be harmful.

Seek urgent medical help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, difficulty breathing, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, or worsening drowsiness. Arrange prompt assessment if excessive thirst is new, persistent, or paired with frequent urination, blurred vision, weight change, or abdominal pain.

Ask what may be driving the thirst, whether blood glucose and kidney function should be checked, and whether oral fluids are suitable. You can also ask which warning signs should bring you back and whether any medicine or illness may be increasing fluid loss.
