Does IUI treat unexplained infertility?

Unexplained infertility means the usual evaluation has not found a clear reason for difficulty conceiving. It does not mean that conception is impossible or that every possible factor has been measured. IUI places washed, prepared sperm in the uterus close to ovulation, which can improve timing and reduce barriers in the lower reproductive tract. Treatment may be paired with medicines that support egg development, or it may use the natural cycle.

IUI is less suitable when the fallopian tubes are blocked, ovulation cannot be supported, or another finding calls for a different treatment. The recommendation should reflect the complete assessment of both partners.

Ask the clinic to confirm which tests have been completed, including ovulation assessment, tubal evaluation, ovarian reserve review, and semen analysis. If IUI is chosen, monitoring may include ultrasound and hormone checks, followed by insemination around ovulation. Discuss the expected time frame for reviewing the plan, the effects of any medicines, and what information would prompt a move to another option. Bringing previous results avoids repeating tests unnecessarily.

Seek fertility advice when pregnancy has not occurred after regular attempts, or sooner if there are irregular periods, severe pelvic pain, prior pelvic infection, previous reproductive surgery, or a known fertility issue. During treatment, urgent assessment is needed for severe abdominal swelling or pain, heavy bleeding, breathing difficulty, fainting, or fever. Do not wait for a planned appointment when these symptoms occur.

Ask what has been ruled out, whether both tubes are open, how ovulation will be timed, and whether medication is appropriate. Discuss how you will judge whether IUI is helping, when to review the diagnosis, and which alternative would be considered if pregnancy does not occur.
