Does hypothyroidism cause hoarse voice?

A hoarse voice can sound rough, breathy, weak, or lower than usual. With hypothyroidism, changes in body tissues and swelling around the throat may affect how the vocal cords vibrate. Viral illness, allergies, reflux, voice overuse, smoking, and other throat or vocal-cord problems can also cause hoarseness. A voice change by itself cannot establish the cause.

Rest your voice when it feels strained, drink fluids regularly, and avoid shouting, whispering, and smoke exposure. Note whether the change follows a cold, reflux symptoms, or heavy voice use. Arrange a medical review if hoarseness persists, recurs, or affects communication. A clinician can examine your throat, review thyroid symptoms and treatment, and decide whether a voice specialist is needed. Do not stop prescribed thyroid medicine without advice.

Seek urgent care for hoarseness with difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing neck swelling, or sudden severe allergic symptoms. Arrange prompt assessment for coughing blood, a neck lump, unexplained weight change, or a voice change that does not settle.

Ask whether thyroid testing or a throat examination is appropriate and whether reflux, allergies, or voice strain could contribute. Tell the clinician when the hoarseness began, whether swallowing is affected, and which medicines, inhalers, or tobacco exposures apply.
