Does hypertension cause blurred vision?

Persistently raised blood pressure can affect the small blood vessels that supply the retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. A severe rise may cause visual disturbance through swelling or reduced blood flow. Some people have no warning symptoms, so clear vision does not rule out hypertension.

Blurred vision may affect one or both eyes and may come and go or persist. A clinician will consider when it started, whether there is eye pain, headache, weakness, or speech trouble, and whether you take blood-pressure medicines. Blood pressure measurement and an eye examination can help separate possible causes.

If the change is new or recurrent, arrange a medical review and record when it happens, how long it lasts, and whether one eye or both are affected. Take prescribed blood-pressure medicine exactly as directed; do not double a missed dose unless your clinician has given that instruction. Avoid driving while vision is unclear. An optometrist or ophthalmologist may be needed if the pattern suggests an eye condition.

Seek emergency care for sudden loss of vision, a curtain-like shadow, severe eye pain, new weakness or numbness, difficulty speaking, confusion, chest pain, or breathlessness. A very severe headache with visual change also needs urgent assessment. These signs can reflect an eye emergency, stroke, or dangerously raised blood pressure.
