Does high calcium in cancer cause persistent fatigue?

High calcium in cancer, also called hypercalcaemia of malignancy, occurs when calcium builds up in the blood in connection with a cancer. Some cancers affect bone or release signals that change how the body handles calcium. The resulting chemical imbalance can slow normal activity in muscles and nerves, contribute to dehydration through increased urination, and leave a person weak, sleepy, or unable to concentrate.

Fatigue may occur alongside thirst, a dry mouth, constipation, nausea, reduced appetite, muscle weakness, confusion, or needing to pass urine more often. Cancer itself, treatment effects, infection, anaemia, poor sleep, pain, and emotional strain can also cause tiredness, so persistent fatigue needs assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Tell your oncology team about fatigue that is new, worsening, or not improving with rest, especially if it is accompanied by marked thirst, vomiting, constipation, weakness, or changes in alertness. A clinician can review your medicines, fluid intake, cancer history, and other possible causes, then arrange a blood test for calcium and related measures when appropriate.

Keep a brief record of when the tiredness began, how it affects walking or daily tasks, how much you are drinking, and any new symptoms. Follow the fluid and treatment advice given by your team; do not take calcium supplements or stop prescribed medicines without checking first.

Seek urgent medical help if fatigue comes with confusion, unusual drowsiness, fainting, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, a very irregular heartbeat, or difficulty waking. These symptoms can signal a significant disturbance or dehydration and should not wait for a routine appointment.
