Does hip osteoarthritis cause limping?

Short answer
Limping is a common presentation of Hip Osteoarthritis, but a limp can also result from other hip, leg or back problems.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible mechanism
- Pain and stiffness may shorten the step or shift weight.
- Helpful assessment
- Walking, strength and movement are examined together.
Why walking may change
Pain, stiffness and reduced hip movement can make a person shorten their step or avoid loading one side. This protective pattern is often called an antalgic gait. Weakness around the hip can add to the difficulty, especially when standing on one leg, climbing stairs or walking for longer periods.
The appearance of a limp does not identify its cause. A clinician may watch you walk, compare both sides, examine hip and knee movement, and consider the spine or foot when symptoms do not fit a hip problem.
What may help
Use shorter walks and rest before pain makes your gait markedly worse. Physiotherapy may target hip and trunk strength, balance, joint movement and a smoother walking pattern. A cane can sometimes reduce load when it is correctly fitted and used on the opposite side, but ask a professional to show you how. Supportive shoes and pacing may also help.
When a limp needs review
Book an assessment if limping continues, is increasing, or affects work, sleep or everyday mobility. Seek urgent care after an injury if you cannot put weight through the leg, or if severe pain, fever, redness, sudden swelling, new numbness or weakness appears. A sudden unexplained change in walking deserves prompt attention.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your walking pattern suggests hip pain, weakness or another source; whether a walking aid is appropriate; and which exercises can improve strength without aggravating symptoms.
