Repeated irritation may cause soreness or narrowing in the food pipe, creating a sensation that food sticks behind the breastbone. Some people describe pressure, burning, regurgitation, or frequent throat clearing instead. Difficulty swallowing can have other causes, so its pattern matters.

Describe whether solids, liquids, or both are affected, and mention reflux, weight change, pain, or food sticking.
