Can a herniated disc cause radiating leg pain?

A herniated disc in the lower spine can inflame or press on a nerve root. Because that nerve continues through the buttock and leg, the brain may register pain along its pathway rather than only at the back. The pain may be sharp, burning, or electric and can be accompanied by tingling, numbness, or weakness.

Coughing, sneezing, sitting, or bending may aggravate symptoms in some people. The route and extent of pain depend on the nerve involved. Other conditions can also cause leg pain, so an examination helps identify whether the pattern fits nerve irritation.

Take short walks and change position regularly if those activities remain comfortable. Avoid heavy lifting, repeated bending, or twisting that intensifies the travelling pain. Do not force a stretch into the leg. A clinician can test leg strength, reflexes, sensation, and movement and recommend an appropriate treatment plan.

Get prompt medical assessment for increasing pain with new numbness or weakness, or for difficulty standing or walking. Go to emergency care if you develop loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the inner thighs or genitals, or rapidly worsening weakness in both legs. These changes need immediate evaluation.
