Does heat exhaustion cause headache?

Working or staying in high heat encourages sweating and raises the body's cooling demands. Fluid and salt loss, muscle fatigue and changes in blood flow can contribute to head pain. The headache may occur with thirst, weakness, dizziness, clammy skin or nausea. A headache has many possible causes, so its presence by itself does not establish heat exhaustion.

Stop exercise, rest in a cool area and remove unnecessary layers. Sip cool water or an oral rehydration drink if you are fully alert and not vomiting. Cool your face, neck and skin with damp cloths or moving air. Avoid returning to heat or exertion until you feel recovered. Do not give drinks to someone who is confused or very drowsy.

Get urgent medical help for confusion, loss of consciousness, seizure, severe worsening pain, repeated vomiting, trouble speaking, weakness on one side, or very hot skin. Call for help if symptoms do not improve promptly with cooling and rest. A sudden severe headache or a headache after a significant injury also needs urgent assessment.
