Does hamstring strain cause thigh pain?

Short answer
Thigh Pain is a very common presentation of Hamstring Strain, often felt along the back of the thigh after sudden loading.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What a strain can feel like
The hamstrings run along the back of the thigh and help bend the knee and extend the hip. A strain can cause a sharp pain during sprinting, jumping, kicking, or a sudden stretch, followed by soreness with walking or bending. Tenderness, tightness, weakness, swelling, or bruising may develop. Pain higher near the buttock or lower near the knee can also occur. Thigh pain has many possible causes, so its location and the triggering event help guide an assessment.
Early self-care
Stop the movement that caused the pain and use comfortable, gentle activity rather than testing the muscle repeatedly. Cold wrapped in a cloth may ease early discomfort. Avoid aggressive stretching or massage while the injury is acutely painful. Once walking is comfortable, a physiotherapist can guide progressive strengthening and a gradual return to running or sport based on symptoms and function.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if you cannot walk normally, weakness persists, bruising is extensive, or pain is not improving. Seek urgent care after a major injury, if you felt a sudden pop with loss of function, or if the leg becomes markedly swollen, cold, pale, numb, or unusually painful.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which hamstring area is affected, what movements to avoid initially, and when strengthening should begin. Ask how to judge readiness for sport and how to reduce the chance of another strain.

Questions people ask
Can a hamstring strain hurt when walking?
Yes. Walking lengthens and loads the hamstring, so soreness or weakness may be noticeable after the initial injury.
When can I stretch after a hamstring strain?
Wait until ordinary movement is comfortable and use a gradual programme guided by symptoms or a physiotherapist.
