Does growth scan treat polyhydramnios?

Polyhydramnios means there is more amniotic fluid than expected. A growth scan can estimate the fluid level and examine fetal growth, movement, position and visible anatomy. It may help the team decide whether further monitoring or additional assessment is appropriate.

The scan cannot remove fluid or correct the reason it has increased. Care depends on the amount of fluid, pregnancy stage, symptoms and any associated findings. Your team may review conditions such as gestational diabetes as part of the assessment.

Keep your ultrasound and maternity appointments, and complete any glucose checks or other tests arranged for you. Mention increasing abdominal size, breathlessness, discomfort, contractions or reduced movements. Follow advice about activity and medicines rather than trying to manage the fluid level yourself.

Seek prompt maternity advice for leaking fluid, vaginal bleeding, regular contractions, marked breathlessness, severe abdominal pain, or reduced fetal movement. If symptoms become sudden or severe, use emergency services. A planned scan should not delay urgent assessment.

Ask how the fluid was measured, whether fetal growth and position are reassuring, what may be contributing to the finding, when monitoring should be repeated, and which symptoms require same-day review.
