Does a GP consultation treat rubella?

Rubella is a contagious viral infection that may cause a fine rash, swollen glands and mild fever; some people have few or no symptoms. A GP can review the rash and illness pattern, check vaccination and exposure history, and decide whether testing or public-health advice is needed. Antibiotics do not treat the virus itself.

Care is generally supportive, such as rest, fluids and suitable relief for discomfort. Avoid close contact with pregnant people and follow local clinical advice about staying away from others, because infection during pregnancy can harm an unborn baby. Tell the practice before attending so they can reduce exposure to other patients.

Phone a GP practice if rubella is possible rather than arriving without warning.
