Does GP consultation treat mumps?

Mumps is a viral infection that can cause painful swelling near the jaw, fever, headache, muscle aches and reduced appetite. A GP will ask about symptoms, vaccination and possible exposure, then examine the swelling and other signs. Testing may be considered because several illnesses can look similar. There is no routine antibiotic treatment for a viral infection, so care often focuses on fluids, rest and suitable relief for pain or fever. The clinician can also explain how to limit spread.

Call the GP practice before attending if mumps is possible, because you may need to avoid the waiting room. Rest, drink fluids and choose soft foods if chewing is uncomfortable. Use only medicines that are appropriate for your age, pregnancy status and other conditions. Avoid close contact as advised, especially with people who are unvaccinated or medically vulnerable. Keep a note of fever, swelling, pain and fluid intake so the consultation can be more useful.

Seek urgent help for severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, inability to keep fluids down or signs of dehydration. Prompt medical review is also needed for severe abdominal pain, testicular or breast swelling, or hearing changes.
