Does GP consultation treat laryngitis?

Laryngitis is inflammation of the voice box and commonly causes a hoarse, weak, or absent voice. A GP will ask when the change began, whether you have a cough, sore throat, fever, reflux symptoms, voice strain, or exposure to irritants. They may examine your throat, listen to your breathing, and review medicines or health conditions that could affect your voice.

Many episodes improve with supportive care rather than a specific medicine. Antibiotics are not useful for every cause. Persistent hoarseness, repeated episodes, or concerning examination findings may lead to referral to an ear, nose and throat specialist for a closer look at the vocal cords.

Rest your voice by speaking less and avoiding shouting or whispering, which can also strain the vocal cords. Drink fluids, avoid cigarette smoke and other irritants, and use humidified air if it feels soothing. Do not start antibiotics or steroid medicine without clinical advice. Arrange a GP appointment if symptoms are troublesome, keep returning, or do not settle as expected; bring a list of medicines and note any pattern linked to work, singing, reflux, or allergies.

Seek urgent medical help if hoarseness comes with difficulty breathing, noisy breathing, trouble swallowing saliva, or rapidly increasing throat swelling. Contact a GP promptly for coughing blood, unexplained weight loss, a neck lump, severe pain, or a voice change that persists. These features do not identify a single diagnosis, but they need timely assessment.

Ask what may be irritating your voice, whether reflux or an infection could be contributing, how long to rest your voice, and what change should prompt referral to an ear, nose and throat specialist.
