Does a GP consultation treat concussion?

Short answer

A GP consultation can assess concussion, identify warning signs, and guide recovery, but it does not replace urgent care when symptoms are severe or worsening.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the consultation involves

Concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury that can affect thinking, balance, mood and energy even when there is no loss of consciousness. The GP may ask how the injury happened, review symptoms, examine movement and coordination, and check memory or alertness. This helps decide whether home observation is reasonable or whether hospital assessment and brain imaging are needed. A consultation can also provide advice about rest, gradual return to school or work, driving, sport and screen use. Recovery is monitored because symptoms can change after the injury.

What to do after an assessment

Follow the activity plan given to you and avoid another head injury while symptoms remain. Keep the first day or two calm, then increase ordinary activity gradually if it does not make symptoms worse. Have a responsible adult check on you if advised, and avoid alcohol or medicines that make you unusually sleepy unless a clinician has recommended them. Arrange follow-up if headaches, dizziness, poor concentration, sleep changes or irritability continue, because the plan may need adjusting.

When urgent help is needed

Seek emergency care for a worsening headache, repeated vomiting, increasing confusion, unusual drowsiness, a seizure, weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, unequal pupils, loss of coordination, or fluid or blood from the nose or ears. Get urgent advice after a head injury if the person takes blood-thinning medicine, has a bleeding disorder, or cannot be observed safely at home.

Questions to ask your doctor

Ask when it is safe to drive, work, study or exercise; which symptoms should trigger an urgent review; whether you need follow-up; and how to return gradually to activities that require concentration or balance.

Questions people ask

Can a GP diagnose concussion?

A GP can assess the injury and symptoms, look for signs of a more serious problem, and decide whether further assessment is needed.

Do all concussions need a scan?

No. The need for imaging depends on the injury, examination and warning signs, and is decided by a clinician.
