Does a GP consultation treat cluster headache?

Cluster headache causes repeated, very severe pain around one eye or one side of the head. Attacks may come with a red or watering eye, blocked or runny nostril, eyelid drooping or restlessness on the same side. Because other serious causes can produce severe headache, a GP will ask about the timing, pattern, neurological symptoms and previous attacks.

A GP may arrange urgent assessment, prescribe or coordinate treatment for an attack, and discuss prevention when attacks occur in a pattern. Specialist neurology input may be needed, particularly when the diagnosis is uncertain, the pattern changes or treatment is difficult to manage. Ordinary painkillers may not be enough for this condition.

Seek a prompt GP assessment for new severe one-sided headaches or repeated attacks around the eye. Keep a record of attack time, duration, side, eye or nose symptoms, possible triggers and medicines used. Take the record to the appointment and use prescribed treatments exactly as directed. Avoid driving if an attack affects your vision or ability to function.

Call emergency services for a sudden explosive headache, new weakness or numbness, difficulty speaking, fainting, seizure, confusion, fever with a stiff neck, or a painful red eye with vision loss. Get urgent help when a familiar headache changes sharply or does not settle as expected.
