Does gout cause knee pain?

Urate crystals can inflame the knee joint and cause sudden pain, tenderness, swelling, warmth and stiffness. Bending the knee or bearing weight may become difficult. The pain may be felt around the whole joint rather than in one clearly injured spot.

Knee pain is not specific to gout. A ligament or meniscus injury, osteoarthritis, bursitis and infection can produce overlapping symptoms. A clinician may ask about the onset, examine the knee and consider testing before choosing treatment.

Rest from impact and deep bending while the knee is sore. Support the leg in a comfortable position and try a cool pack through fabric for short periods. Use a walking aid only if you know how to use it safely. Take prescribed flare medicine according to its instructions rather than adding unreviewed painkillers.

Seek urgent medical help for a hot swollen knee with fever, chills, rapidly worsening pain, inability to bear weight, or feeling seriously unwell. Infection can damage a joint and may resemble gout. Arrange a review for a first episode, recurrent knee attacks or pain that continues despite rest.

Ask whether the knee findings fit gout or another problem, whether testing would clarify the diagnosis, and which medicines are safe with your health history. Ask when gentle exercise and full weight-bearing are appropriate again.
