Does gastroenteritis cause vomiting?

Vomiting is the forceful emptying of stomach contents through the mouth. During gastroenteritis, inflammation or infection can activate the body’s vomiting reflex. Episodes may be sudden and can leave you tired, thirsty or unable to face food.

Vomiting has other causes, including migraine, medicines, pregnancy and problems outside the stomach and bowel. The symptom needs assessment in its full context, especially if it is unusual for you or accompanied by concerning pain.

After vomiting, wait until the immediate urge has eased, then take tiny sips of fluid at frequent intervals. If that stays down, gradually increase the amount. Oral rehydration drinks can be useful when fluid and salts have been lost.

Avoid alcohol and rich foods until your stomach is calmer. Keep a note of how often you vomit, what fluids you retain and whether you are passing urine, as this information can help a clinician judge dehydration.

Seek urgent medical help for blood in vomit, dark vomit resembling coffee grounds, green vomit, severe abdominal pain, chest pain, a stiff neck, confusion, fainting or severe weakness. Get clinical advice if you cannot keep fluids down, show signs of dehydration, or vomiting is becoming more frequent or severe.
