Does gastroenteritis cause fever?

A fever may come with diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, tiredness or aches. It can make you feel cold or shivery even when your body is warmer than usual. Gastroenteritis is one possible cause of fever, while respiratory infections, urinary infections and other illnesses can also cause it.

Fluid loss deserves close attention because fever can add to the fluid lost through diarrhoea or vomiting. Feeling thirsty, a dry mouth, dizziness and passing little urine can point to dehydration.

Rest in a comfortably cool room, wear light clothing and take regular drinks. Small, frequent sips may be easier if you also feel sick. An oral rehydration drink may help replace both fluid and salts.

Get urgent medical help for confusion, difficulty breathing, a stiff neck, a new widespread rash, severe abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, or inability to keep fluids down. Seek clinical advice if the fever persists, you are becoming dehydrated, or you are worried about a very young child, an older adult or a person with a weakened immune system.
