Does gastroenteritis cause diarrhoea?

Gastroenteritis is irritation or infection of the stomach and intestines. The bowel may move fluid through too quickly, producing loose or watery stools. Diarrhoea can also have other causes, including food intolerance, medicines and other infections, so the symptom alone does not identify its cause.

The main practical concern is fluid loss. Each loose stool can remove water and salts that the body needs, particularly if diarrhoea occurs with vomiting or a reduced ability to drink.

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink. Continue drinking even if your appetite is low. Choose simple foods when you feel able, and avoid alcohol while your stomach is unsettled.

Wash hands carefully after using the toilet and before preparing food. Rest, monitor how much you are drinking and notice whether your urine becomes much darker or less frequent.

Seek urgent medical help for blood or black material in the stool, severe or worsening abdominal pain, fainting, confusion, marked drowsiness, or signs that you cannot keep fluids down. Contact a clinician if diarrhoea is not settling, dehydration is developing, or you have a condition that makes fluid loss harder to manage.

Ask whether your symptoms suggest dehydration, which drinks are suitable for you, and whether any regular medicines need special attention while you have diarrhoea.
