Does gastritis cause nausea?

Gastritis irritates the stomach lining. That irritation may produce nausea with upper-abdominal burning, discomfort, bloating, belching, or reduced appetite. Some people notice symptoms after meals, while others feel sick between meals. The pattern depends on the underlying trigger and on the person. Nausea is also associated with infections, medicines, migraine, pregnancy, reflux, and other digestive conditions, so it does not by itself show that gastritis is present. Vomiting may occur, but nausea can happen without vomiting.

Take small sips of fluid and try small, plain meals when you can tolerate them. Eat slowly, avoid alcohol, and limit foods or medicines that you know aggravate your stomach. Resting upright after eating may feel more comfortable than lying flat. If nausea started after a medicine, contact a clinician or pharmacist before changing the dose. Persistent symptoms may need an assessment for the cause and treatment that fits it.

Seek medical advice if nausea continues, keeps returning, prevents normal eating, or is accompanied by ongoing pain or weight loss. Get urgent help if vomiting prevents fluid intake, you become faint or confused, vomit blood, pass black stools, have severe abdominal pain, or develop chest pain or breathing difficulty.

Ask whether your nausea pattern suggests stomach irritation, whether any medicine may be responsible, and how to prevent dehydration. Ask which symptoms would mean you need urgent review and whether follow-up testing is needed.
