Does gastritis cause hiccups?

Hiccups are repeated involuntary contractions of the breathing muscle. Irritation or stretching around the upper stomach can stimulate nerves involved in that reflex, so gastritis may occur alongside hiccups. Eating quickly, a large meal, fizzy drinks, reflux, and some medicines can also trigger them. Occasional hiccups are usually short-lived, while persistent episodes may interfere with eating, drinking, sleeping, or breathing and deserve medical attention.

Sip water slowly, eat calmly, and avoid fizzy drinks or large meals if they make episodes worse. Keep your torso upright after eating and note whether hiccups appear with burning, nausea, pain, or bloating. Do not use forceful tricks or take someone else's medicine. If episodes keep returning or make it hard to eat or sleep, arrange a clinical review.

Seek urgent care if hiccups occur with severe abdominal or chest pain, repeated vomiting, vomiting blood, black stool, confusion, faintness, or trouble breathing. Prompt assessment is also sensible when hiccups persist and prevent adequate food, fluids, or rest. The clinician may need to look beyond the stomach for causes of ongoing irritation.
