Can gallstones cause nausea?

A gallstone can temporarily obstruct the gallbladder outlet, causing pressure and irritation as the gallbladder contracts. The resulting upper abdominal pain can trigger nausea, particularly after eating. Some people also notice fullness, indigestion, or pain spreading toward the back or right shoulder. Nausea is a broad symptom with many possible explanations, including infection, reflux, medication effects, and pregnancy, so it does not identify gallstones on its own.

Take small sips of fluid and pause solid food briefly if eating makes the nausea worse, then return to light meals as you feel able. Keep a note of pain, meals, vomiting, fever, and urine colour. A clinician can review the pattern, examine you, and decide whether blood tests or an ultrasound are useful. Use anti-nausea medicines only as directed for you.

Get urgent medical help if nausea comes with severe or lasting abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fever, yellow eyes or skin, confusion, faintness, blood in vomit, or inability to keep fluids down. These signs may indicate dehydration, inflammation, or a blocked bile duct. Make a routine appointment when nausea repeatedly follows meals or comes back with upper abdominal discomfort.
