Does gallbladder cancer cause jaundice?

Bile normally moves from the liver and gallbladder through ducts into the intestine. Gallbladder cancer can grow near or into nearby tissues and interfere with this passage. Bilirubin then remains in the bloodstream, which can turn the whites of the eyes or skin yellow. Dark urine, pale stools, itching, nausea, reduced appetite or discomfort under the ribs may accompany the change.

Jaundice also occurs with gallstones, hepatitis, medication effects and other bile-duct or liver conditions. The symptom does not establish cancer. A clinician may arrange blood tests and scans to find where bile flow is affected and identify the cause.

New jaundice needs prompt medical assessment, even when you otherwise feel well. Record when the colour began and note urine, stool, itching, pain, fever, weight change and appetite. Bring your medicine list. Assessment may involve examination, liver blood tests and imaging, followed by specialist review when indicated.

Seek urgent care if jaundice is accompanied by fever, severe or worsening abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, fainting or marked drowsiness. These features may signal infection or a blocked bile duct needing rapid treatment.

Ask what may be blocking bile flow, which tests are planned, whether a specialist should review the findings, and which symptoms should prompt immediate return.
