Does G6PD deficiency cause jaundice?

G6PD deficiency can leave red blood cells less able to handle oxidative stress. During a trigger such as an infection or an unsuitable medicine, cells may break down. The body then produces more bilirubin, a yellow substance formed as red blood cells are cleared. If bilirubin builds up, the whites of the eyes or skin may look yellow. Dark urine, unusual tiredness, pale skin and breathlessness may occur at the same time.

Jaundice has many possible causes, including liver, gallbladder and bile-duct problems. Its appearance does not identify G6PD deficiency by itself. Assessment may include questions about triggers and medicines plus blood tests for bilirubin, red blood cells and liver function.

Arrange prompt medical advice if yellowing develops, particularly if you have known G6PD deficiency or recent illness. Bring a list of medicines, supplements and traditional remedies. Do not take a new product for the symptom without checking its suitability. A clinician can investigate the cause and monitor whether red blood cell breakdown is occurring.

Get urgent help for jaundice with severe weakness, fainting, confusion, fever, intense abdominal pain, vomiting, breathlessness or very little urine. Rapid change in colour or a sudden decline can need immediate assessment.

Ask what may have triggered the episode, which medicines are safe, whether bilirubin and blood counts need checking, and how you should respond if yellowing returns.
