Does a falls prevention programme treat sarcopenia?
Updated

Short answer
A falls prevention programme can reduce fall risk, but it does not usually treat sarcopenia on its own.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main role
- Fall-risk reduction and safer movement
- Sarcopenia care
- Often needs progressive strengthening and wider assessment
What this means
Sarcopenia involves loss of muscle strength, muscle quantity, or physical performance. A falls programme may include balance practice, walking strategies, home-safety advice and exercises that help you react to a trip. Those activities can support independence, yet they may not provide enough progressive resistance or nutrition support to address muscle loss. A clinician can assess strength, walking ability, medicines, nutrition and other contributors before combining fall prevention with a sarcopenia plan.
What you can do
Ask your physiotherapist whether the programme includes progressive strengthening for the legs, hips and trunk, alongside balance work. Use the exercises at the advised level and tell the clinician if pain, breathlessness or unusual fatigue limits you. Keep walkways clear, improve lighting and use a prescribed walking aid correctly. A doctor or dietitian may also discuss adequate protein and treatment of medical problems that affect strength.
When to seek care
Arrange a clinical assessment if weakness is worsening, you are falling repeatedly, or everyday tasks such as rising from a chair or climbing steps are becoming difficult. Seek urgent help after a fall causing severe pain, a head injury, inability to stand, new confusion or sudden one-sided weakness.
Questions for your doctor
Could my strength and walking be assessed for sarcopenia? Which strengthening exercises are suitable for me? Do any medicines, nutrition concerns or other illnesses need attention? How should my plan change after a fall?

Questions people ask
Can balance exercises help sarcopenia?
They can improve balance and confidence, but strength-focused exercise is generally also needed when sarcopenia is present.
Should I stop a falls programme?
Do not stop without advice; ask the treating clinician how to add or adjust strengthening safely.
