Does Earwax Buildup Cause Earache?

A compacted blockage can press on the canal lining and cause aching, pressure, or tenderness. It may also cause fullness, itching, or muffled hearing. Earache alone does not establish that wax is present, because infection, a perforated eardrum, injury, dental problems, and jaw-joint tension can feel similar. An examination separates these possibilities.

Arrange an ear examination if pain persists, returns, or comes with blocked hearing. Keep objects out of the canal and do not irrigate an ear that may have a perforated eardrum, an ear tube, or previous surgery. A clinician can confirm whether buildup is present and advise suitable softening or removal.

Seek prompt medical care for fever, fluid or pus, swelling around the ear, severe or worsening pain, dizziness, or a sudden hearing change. Get urgent advice after an injury or if you have diabetes or reduced immune function.

Ask whether the earache fits wax-related irritation, whether the eardrum can be seen clearly, and what treatment or follow-up is needed.
