Does dry eye cause blurred vision?

Blurred Vision is a common presentation of Dry Eye because an uneven tear film can temporarily affect the eye surface. Vision may clear briefly after blinking and become less sharp during reading, screen use, or exposure to wind or air conditioning. Blurred vision has many other possible causes, so this pattern does not establish the diagnosis.

The tear film normally creates a smooth optical surface over the cornea. When tears evaporate too quickly or are not spread evenly, the surface becomes irregular and vision can fluctuate. Dry eye may also cause burning, a gritty sensation, watering, light sensitivity, or tired eyes.

A clinician may check the eye surface, eyelids, tear quality, and vision. Contact lenses, medicines, inflammation, and other eye conditions can contribute to dryness or blur, so mention all of these during an assessment.

Take regular breaks from close work, blink deliberately, and avoid air blowing directly at your eyes. Clean contact lenses as instructed and stop wearing them if they become uncomfortable until you receive advice. Lubricating eye drops may help some people; a pharmacist or eye-care professional can guide you toward a suitable preservative-free option.

Do not drive or operate machinery while vision is unclear. Arrange a review if blur continues despite blinking and rest, interferes with daily tasks, or keeps returning.

Seek urgent eye care for sudden or marked loss of vision, severe eye pain, a painful red eye, new flashes or many floaters, a curtain-like shadow, injury, or pronounced light sensitivity. Prompt assessment is also needed if blurred vision occurs with weakness, facial drooping, trouble speaking, or a severe headache.

Ask whether the blur is consistent with dry eye, whether your medicines or contact lenses may contribute, which drops are suitable, and what change in vision should trigger urgent review.
